When working out averages it's just as well to use the bracket method i.e. Its clearly larger than 6" (150mm) and not so large as 12" (300mm) total 150×300=450, divide by 2 =225mm (9") sounds about right for the average grandfather clock.

It was working until we took from one residence to another in a suv, were careful, and did not drop or anything like that. WE removed the chimes while moving , put back to gether and no luck even with the level. So , what should we try next.

At the bottom of the "bob" you will see a brass nut. Turn the nut to the right to raise the bob higher, this will cause the pendulum to swing quicker thereby speeding up the time of the clock. Small increments every day until it's right on!

On ours, we have to set the little hand on the number corresponding the the number of chimes you're getting – in other words, if it's chiming four times, put the little hand on four – and then manually cycle the big hand through 24 hours.

Interesting fact: the meter was classically defined to be the length of the simple pendulum making a tick at its turning point once every second, thus a swing period of 2 seconds, as a grandfather clock's pendulum does. Although we've refined the meter's definition and this isn't exactly true, but still approximate. The formula for your use is T = 2*Pi*sqrt(L/g). For a cukoo clock, the pendulum is shorter such that instead of "tick-tock", its escapement sounds as "tick-a-tock-a", making two ticks per second, and a full swing cycle per second. Solve for L, plug in T=1 sec and Earth's gravity g, and you will get approximately L = 24 cm. Thinking of the trend from the classical definition of the meter, this is roughly a quarter meter.

Actually there IS a grandmother clock (honest! ). It is classicly about 2/3's the size of the grand father clock (which are between 6 to 7 feet high) and the chimes are often higher.

Do not move the hands backward. Move the hands forward to the next hour and see if it corrects itself. Make sure you let it ring every 15 mins as you go around. If you go more than 2 hrs around, you may need a pro. If it works, just stop the clock till time catches up.

Do not use WD-40 on a clock. It will gum the works and make a mess. There is a special oil made for clocks. Make sure the weights are raised for the chimes. If the clock has only 1 weight, the weight is used for both the chimes and the clock. If there are 3 weights, only the left and right weights are used for chimes. Your clock probably needs to be serviced by a professional. Grandfather clocks are precision mechanisms and should not be worked on by anyone who doesn't know what they are doing.

One of the brothers died and, according to the story told to Henry Clay Work in 1875, the clock (made by James Thompson) began to lose time. For a start, google 'grandfather clock' into google images and it will give you an idea of what they look like, then explain it in your words. Is it taller than the character by half again? Is the clock face white? Gold? Black? Are the hands brass? Silver? Wood? Does the top come to a rounded or pointed peak or is it flat? Are the pendulum and weights visible through glass or covered by a wood door? Is the ticking loud? Steady? How does it sound when it chimes, if it does? Only include details you feel are important – otherwise you can simply mention the grandfather clock and people can picture it well enough without boring details. If you are going to be describing in detail this clock, it had better be important to the story. If it is, it should have something interesting or peculiar about it. The one in "the last unicorn" for instance was broken, striking the wrong hour at the wrong time.

Check the bottom of the pendulum. If there is a nut there, you can turn it slightly to slow down or speed up the clock (turning it one way slows it down, turning it the other way speeds it up). Turn it about a quarter of a turn each time and wait a few hours to see if the clock sped up or slowed down. Then adjust as necessary. Check the picture in the link.
